To
make mathematics easily for student we can learn from Finland and Sweden.
Finland has become known worldwide for its steady improvements in its
educational system over the past forty years and for high scores in reading,
mathematics, and science according to the Organization for Economic
Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) Program for International Student
Assessment (PISA) of fifteen-year-olds conducted every three years since 2000.
Finland
and Sweden’s schools system are similar to Indonesia and United States, but
upper-secondary schools in Finland (senior high schools in Indonesia) is
focused in academics and most students go on to attend a university after
finishing. Almost mathematics class in Finland and Sweden are similar to
traditional classrooms in United States. After upper secondary schools,
students are provided by formulas and book of mathematics, physic and
chemistry. Their books are also has the solution of the question. Because of
this common resource, the textbooks did seem to have a greater focus on problem
solving and applications.
The
average annual total teaching time in the Finland and Sweden are lower than in
the United States, so teachers has more time to plan curriculum, assess
learning, provide remedial help, and reflect on their teaching. One of
Finland’s highest goals is equity in their schools and between schools. The
cooperation between schools and community is very useful, it’s seem like they
required everyone to understand the subject very well. Educational system in Sweden
is more accommodating the student to learn what they want to learn, because
they impressed the problem solving and it’s focused in a specific field to
study.
A
standardized assessment in Finland is used to help student learning. A
significant difference in Finland is that mathematics teachers in
lower-secondary school and upper-secondary school must have a master’s degree
in mathematics, whereas preschool and elementary teachers must earn a master’s
degree in education. Mathematics teacher
in Finland teach two subjects, and the language subject must teach with two
languages. Teaching is a popular career in Finland, it’s because the good
cooperation between schools, teachers and community.
What we needed to make a good
education system is the cooperation between its elements, teachers, students
and community. Teachers must have a good quality, student must learn about
applications of what they learn at schools and the system must gave the
accommodations for teachers and students.
